Our Cattery

Pedigreed American Shorthairs

IMG_0500.JPG

We are a small cattery located in the rolling hills of Northwest MIssouri.  Our cats are registered in CFA (Cat Fancy Association) and TICA.  CFA is the largest registry worldwide with over 30,000 pedigreed cats and 45 approved breeds for registration.  TICA (The International Cat Association) is the second largest registry. We started showing pedigreed cats in 2004.  The first cat show we attended was in 1983.  Our first cats were Persians.  We lived in Kansas for 33 years before moving to Missouri and this is how we came by the cattery name, Ameri-Kan.

American Shorthairs are a healthy breed with a wonderful temperament.  They are often called the cat with a "silent meow."  They will open their mouth to meow and nothing comes out.  Other times, they will "talk" with a quick succession of short "meows."  Sometimes you will hear little thrills and chirps in their voice.  American Shorthairs are considered America's working breed, as in the early days they were good mousers.  Originally, they were presumed to have come over on the Mayflower and are still one of the top ten most popular breeds.  But don't confuse them with the domestic shorthair cat every farm and household has.  American Shorthairs come in over 80 different colors and color patterns.  The silver and brown tabbies are the most popular colors.  It is our desire through this website to promote the American Shorthair breed and its standard.  We anticipate this site will be informational and educational, so you can benefit from our 40 years of, "It's a CAT's WORLD!"  Enjoy your visit to Ameri-Kan Cattery!
